Almost no one knows of their existence or can't believe it, but they really do exist: angels. Invisible to man, they perform their service on earth. So is Los Angeles. After gathering at the beach of Malibu at sunrise, they start their work. In addition to providing comfort, the angels have an important task. They have to' pick up' dying people and accompany them on their last journey. On this day, Engel Seth (Nicolas Cage) has to do a' routine job', because he is supposed to' pick up' a sick heart patient from the hospital. Everything seems to be normal. The doctor Maggie (Meg Ryan) fights desperately for the life of her patient, but he has to go with the angel. But this time it's a little different than usual. Seth likes Maggie, the beautiful doctor, and that even though angels can't feel any feelings (neither hunger nor pain...). He particularly likes the way Maggie works for her patients. Seth is so fascinated by this woman that he even (very unusual!) to be shown. From the first moment Maggie falls in love with the person who seems a little strange and unapproachable to her, because she does not know that he is an angel. However, Seth's insensitivity, as mentioned above, does not allow for a true love between the two of them. Only the acquaintance of Seths with the patient Messinger (Dennis Franz) seems to offer a way out. Messinger is an ex-angel, who gave up everything out of love for a woman, threw himself off a high-rise building and thus became a human being. He is no longer an angel but a normal person with all the disadvantages, but also the advantage of being able to decide and feel freely. Seth wants to follow this example......
Wer nur einen Funken für romantische Filme übrig hat, sollte sich Stadt der Engel anschauen. Anfangs war ich etwas skeptisch, doch dann konnte mich der Film überzeugen. In herrlichen, stimmungvollen Bildern wird die Zuneigung bzw. die Liebe zwischen der Ärztin Maggie und dem Engel Seth dargestellt. Wirklich romantisch, wenn die Engel auf den Sonnenaufgang warten, oder Seth und Maggie sich in traumhaft schöner Landschaft näher kommen. Die hierbei gefährliche Gratwanderung zwischen Romantik und Kitsch wird vom Regisseur gut gemeistert. Storymäßig gibt dieser Film naturgemäß allerdings eher wenig her: Engel verliebt sich in Frau, das war's. Die Aussage von Nicolas Cage, daß man den Film auch ohne Ton recht gut verstehen würde, unterstreicht diese Tatsache. Dies ist jedoch nicht negativ, denn es wird wie erwartet der gefühlsmäßige Aspekt betont und gekonnt in Szene gesetzt anstatt irgend eine spannende Geschichte zu erzählen. Meg Ryan kann in ihrer Rolle überzeugen, was nicht weiter verwundert, da sie für solche Rollen gerade zu prädestiniert ist ('Schlaflos in Seattle..). Aber auch Nicolas Cage weis zu gefallen. Das hätte man davor nicht unbedingt erwarten können, da Cage bis jetzt Hauptsächlich in Action-Filmen (Con Air, The Rock...) geglänzt hat. So mancher Schauspieler wäre froh, wenn er die Vielseitigkeit von Cage hätte.... Was mir aber am Film am besten gefallen: Der sehr gute Schluß. Wenn bei sonst üblichen Romantikfilmen sich am Schluß alles in Wohlgefallen auflöst und ein kitschiges Happy-End inszeniert wird, tritt hier eher das Gegenteil ein. Der Schluß wird richtig traurig und drückt auf die Tränendrüsen. Man wird praktisch mit einem Schlag aus der romantischen Szenerie herausgerissen. Endlich mal kein kitschiges 'alles wird gut' -Happy-End. Bravo. Kurz gesagt: Ein sehr schöner, in herrlichen Bildern erzählter romantischer Film, der sich vom sonst üblichen Romantik-Kitsch distanziert.
